Zinj African Bead Leather Design: Artisans in a small rural village, Takaungu, Kenya are creating some of the most beautiful beaded leather products that you will find. Using the softest free-range leather and traditional bead work in contemporary design, the Zinj artisans hand make practical, impeccable, wearable works of art. Hand stitched, hand beaded and finished with hand cast buckles from recycled scrap brass, the workmanship is exquisitely detailed and guaranteed to last a lifetime.
From handbags, to belts, smartphone wallets to dog collars, the Zinj products are lovingly created by talented villagers who have mastered the art of beads and leather design. Along the way, they have found the lifestyle that affords them the luxury of sending their children to school and opening a bank account, knowing they will be able to provide dinner for their families. They are no longer among the unemployed. The Zinj African bead leather craft is sure to become an important staple in this small community.
Named for the medieval term referring to the ancient Swahili coast of East Africa, Zinj (also Zanj) is an Arabic term literally translated as “Land of the Blacks.” Zinj Design is dedicated to share the traditional East African bead work design across the globe while improving the lives of East African craftspeople, or fundis, in their Kenyan home. Zinj has also made a special impact on women in the community who had few options for employment. With Zinj training sessions, women are invited to learn what has traditionally been a man’s craft. Zinj Design began its operation in 2008 with three people. Today over seventy craftspeople are employed with steady incomes contributing to their community.
We at CV Art and Frame are delighted to have discovered this tiny community of artisans creating such incredibly practical art. Your purchase directly supports the people of this community and is greatly appreciated.
