Tom Bartel, a lifelong resident of Indiana, graduated Honorary Summa Cum Laude, and Outstanding Art Senior, 1971, from Ball State University majoring in Sculpture and Art Education.

Tom has devoted his life to his wife and 3 children. After over 15 years as a high school art teacher, Tom is now enjoying retirement and his role as a grandfather.

Tom’s artwork is most inspired by English sculptor, Henry Moore and Michelangelo. While he works primarily with wood, Tom has also worked with stone, metal, semi-precious metal, plastics, clay, and fiber. Through the use of wood as his main medium, his work embodies a combination of abstract ideas and forms with a hint of realism.

Artist’s Statement

I believe that art evolves from the natural beauty and wonder that God gave us…it surrounds us in our world. My art is developed from my experiences and my impression of how those images and forms relate to one another. Wood, one of the most fertile materials on Earth, embodies almost every characteristic of mankind. My work embodies a combination of abstract ideas and realistic forms.
