Cynthia Young Biography
Cynthia Young is a visual artist from Zionsville, Indiana. Her work explores the expressive space between realism and abstraction, a style we like to refer to as organic impressions. Drawing inspiration from nature, the human figure, portraiture, florals, landscapes, and abstract forms, she creates layered paintings that invite viewers to look beyond the surface. Working intuitively with a variety of media, color palettes, and techniques, Cynthia embraces spontaneity, often painting quickly to preserve the energy and immediacy of her first response.
Her creative process begins with observation. Frequently working from life, she starts with quick gesture drawings that sharpen her eye and loosen her hand. These instinctive studies often become finished works themselves or serve as the foundation for larger paintings. Through layering, reworking, and reimagining her compositions, Cynthia creates pieces that reveal new details over time, encouraging viewers to pause, look again, and discover something unexpected.
Cynthia earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior/Environmental Design from Ball State University and spent many years as a residential and commercial interior designer. Today, she combines her artistic practice with arts leadership, serving as Executive Director of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville, Indiana. Both careers have profoundly shaped her perspective, informing her understanding of composition, space, and the relationship between artwork and its environment.
Her artistic influences include Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Henri Matisse, Franz Kline, Richard Diebenkorn, and Robert Kushner, whose diverse approaches to form, color, and expression continue to inspire her work. Cynthia’s paintings strive to move beyond beauty alone, creating experiences that evoke emotion, spark curiosity, and celebrate the richness of the creative process.
Whether capturing the essence of a figure, interpreting the rhythms of a landscape, or abstracting the forms found in nature, Cynthia hopes her work encourages others to embrace their own creativity and see the world as the vibrant, colorful creation it is.
