Ted Geisel, more popularly known as Dr. Seuss, lived in San Diego, California where he was one of the few men of his era who worked from home. This gave him the unusual opportunity to observe the high society women (his wife, Audrey, was one of them) gadding about and socializing in various ways throughout the day.

La Valencia Birdwoman by Dr. Seuss

After Ted had worked hard on his books all day, he found respite creating art at his easel. This was Ted time. He created strictly for his own enjoyment, what we now know as his ‘midnight paintings’. Many of his creations were humorous caricatures of what he called the Birdwomen. Some of these creations have already been published as part of The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss and newly released is what is believed to be one of his earlier sketches: La Valencia Birdwoman. Link may expire to newer releases after October 2026.
